Choosing an NEMT company can seem pretty simple when you are searching from home.
Type in medical transportation. A few companies appear. Check the price, look at the reviews, and choose one.
But when you are the person who actually needs the ride, there are other things to think about.
Will the driver know how to help me? Will the vehicle work for my wheelchair? Will someone help me from the door to the vehicle? What if the appointment takes longer than expected?
These things can affect the whole experience.
Before comparing companies, think about what the passenger actually needs. Someone may be able to walk but still need some assistance. Someone else may use a wheelchair and need an accessible vehicle. A bed-bound patient may need stretcher transportation and appropriate medical assistance. Explain the situation. Can the passenger get into a vehicle alone? Do they use a wheelchair? Do they need help from the house to the vehicle? Is stretcher transportation required? This gives the provider a clearer picture and helps you determine whether they can handle the trip.
The vehicle matters, but the people helping the passenger matter too. For someone with limited mobility, traveling can already be stressful. Ask about driver training and whether staff are trained to assist passengers with mobility limitations. If medical assistance is needed, ask who will be traveling with the patient. And notice how the company answers your questions. Do they explain things clearly? Do they talk about safety and cleanliness? Is someone actually available when you call? Sometimes that short conversation tells you quite a lot.
Of course, cost matters.
But a cheaper ride doesn't help if the vehicle cannot accommodate the passenger or assistance isn't available.
Look at the practical things first. Where do they operate? What type of transportation do they offer? And do they have the staff and vehicles needed for different passenger needs?
Safe Care Medical Transportation offers wheelchair-accessible vans and assisted, door-to-door ambulatory transportation throughout the metropolitan area of Houston. For bed-bound patients, it also provides stretcher/ambulance transportation with two EMTs.
Safe Care says it has licensed and certified technicians, certified drivers, and more than 25 customized company-owned vehicles.
These are the kinds of details worth checking before booking a ride.
So instead of asking only, "How much does the ride cost?"
Ask:
"Can this company handle my ride properly?"
That is where the comparison should really begin.
